John Holt was an author of school and history books as well as agricultural surveys and articles for monthly magazines. He also collected materials for a history of Liverpool which he bequeathed to Matthew Gregson (1749-1824). Gregson was an antiquary but made his living as an upholsterer. He had a great interest in science and literature and collected documentary and pictorial information of Liverpool.
